Brian Rice

Four of Brian Rice's 1960's abstract prints are held by the Tate Collection, a period, together with the 1970s, during which he reached heady heights of fame in the art world and was collected worldwide by public institutions, major collectors and many well-known celebrity names.

A long-time Dorset resident, Brian has allowed us to take a little look through some of his back catalogue and we are very privileged to have three of his very unique and highly collectable canvases decorating the walls of the Gallery here at Hilfield Manor.

Born in Yeovil, Somerset in 1936, the work he created in London, after leaving Yeovil School of Art in 1954, featured prominently in the op-art movement of the 60’s and early 70’s and his paintings and original prints could be seen not only in the top London galleries, but also found featured in The Sunday Times, Observer, Tatler and many other publications of that time.

Brian’s work is in over 60 collections in the UK and USA, including the Tate Gallery, British Council, V&A Museum and Govt. Art Collection. Featured in BBC Time Shift programme, 'Art School'. Work illustrated in new book - 'Modern and Contemporary Prints, A Practical Guide to Collecting' published by Antique Collectors Club.

Rice has had work exhibited in London at the RA Summer Show, National Print Exhibition, New Vision Centre Gallery, and Messum’s along with shows in Japan, Verona, Padua and Milan.

Brian's pieces are available to view at any time by appointment, we may bring a piece to the Barn for those that are interested.

Brian has just donated a limited edition print to the TUSK Modern Art show to be held at the BAFTA headquarters in December.  See more on the News page.
