McMaster Tims Contemporary Art

About Fernando Velázquez

Born in 1966, Fernando Velázquez grew up in a small village just outside Seville.

An established artist with many solo shows and exhibitions to his name, Fernando moved to London from Spain in 1996 where he spent several years working  from a studio in Hackney.  Having developed a large following of dedicated fans and collectors (amongst them,Tilly McMaster and Rachel Tims of McMaster Tims Contemporary Art), he is living now in the rural splendour of Dorset, a new source of inspiration in a new phase of his career.

Fernando Velázquez paints by night, his huge signature canvases crowding around him in the semi darkness as he flamboyantly combines aspects of contemporary abstract art with a distinctly traditional Spanish style of painting with oils on canvas.  His complex layers of texture and colour, thickly applied oils, the occasional sheen of glaze and unique mixes of pigment, revealing unexpected elements at every turn.  A gloriously  successful marriage of passion, mystery and subtlety.

Velázquez' paintings can be found in the Hotel Arts Contemporary Art Collection, Barcelona; in  Universal Records' Collection, London and with Stephen Rosenberg in New York as well as in many private homes around the world.

Fernando Velázquez specialises in large, abstract, heavily textured oils on canvas. The paintings are immensely dramatic and strong pieces.
